INTRODUCTION ABOUT OLMESAR 20MG TABLET
OLMESAR 20MG TABLET contains Olmesartan which belongs to the group of medicines called Angiotensin II receptor antagonists. It is used to manage high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults, children and adolescents (from aged 6 years to less than 18 years).
Hypertension is a condition in which the force of the blood against the blood vessel walls is too high which is characterized by headache, irregular heartbeat, vision changes, feeling of overtiredness, nausea, vomiting, confusion, anxiety and chest pain
Your doctor may advice you to take regular exercise such as walking or swimming, low salt diet, giving up smoking and alcohol drinking, which helps to reduce blood pressure effectively during management with this medicine.
OLMESAR 20MG TABLET should be used with caution in patients with kidney, liver or heart problems. Your doctor may check your kidney function test, blood pressure and the amount of electrolytes (Ex. potassium) in your body prior to the management with OLMESAR 20MG TABLET or at regular intervals along with the management.
OLMESAR 20MG TABLET is not recommended in early pregnancy and must not be taken when more than 3 months pregnant. It is also not recommended for use in breastfeeding women.
OLMESAR 20MG TABLET is not recommended for use in children (below 6 years of age) and should be used with caution in children and adolescents (6 to 18 years of age). OLMESAR 20MG TABLET should be used with caution in elderly patients (aged 65 years and above).
The most common side effects of taking OLMESAR 20MG TABLET are dizziness, nausea, headache, diarrhoea and stomach pain. Consult your doctor if any of the side effects worsen.
USES OF OLMESAR 20MG TABLET
Used in adults, children and adolescents (aged 6 to 18 years):
- To manage high blood pressure
HOW OLMESAR 20MG TABLET WORKS
OLMESAR 20MG TABLET relaxes blood vessels and thus lowers blood pressure by blocking the effects of Angiotensin II (a substance produced in the body which causes the narrowing of blood vessels).
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
Take OLMESAR 20MG TABLET as advised by your physician. Swallow the medicine with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you based on your age, body weight and disease condition.
SIDE EFFECTS OF OLMESAR 20MG TABLET
COMMON
- dizziness, headache
- nausea
- nose bleeding (in children)
- stomach pain, diarrhoea
- gastroenteritis (stomach flu)
- tiredness
- sore throat, cough
- runny or stuffy nose
- bronchitis
- flu-like symptoms (Ex. fever, chills, cough, runny nose)
- pain in the chest, back, bones or joints
- urinary tract infections, blood in the urine
- swelling of ankles, feet, legs, hands or arms
UNCOMMON
- rapid allergic reactions that may cause breathing problems, rapid fall of blood pressure that may even lead to fainting (anaphylactic reactions)
- feeling of spinning (vertigo)
- vomiting
- feeling unwell, weakness
- muscular pain
- allergic skin rash, itching
- exanthema (skin eruption)
- skin lumps (wheals)
- signs of low platelet count (include easy bruising or prolonged bleeding from cuts)
RARE
- lack of energy
- muscle cramps
- impaired kidney function or kidney failure
- signs of high potassium levels in the blood (muscle spasms or abnormal heart rhythm)
Stop taking OLMESAR 20MG TABLET and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:
- allergic reactions (signs include swelling of the face, mouth and/or larynx (voice box), itching and rash)
- reduced blood pressure in susceptible individuals or because of allergic reaction which could cause severe light-headedness or fainting (more often in older people)
HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS
Headache:
Drink ample amount of water and avoid skipping meals. Get adequate rest. Try to be relaxed and stress free. Apply pain relieving balm on your forehead if necessary. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve.
Nausea or vomiting:
Stick to simple meals while taking this medicine. Avoid eating oily rich, fried or spicy foods. Do not lie down or sleep immediately after eating. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve.
Diarrhea:
Drink lot of fluids, such as water to keep yourself hydrated. Avoid eating high-fat or spicy foods. Try to avoid taking any medicine on your own to manage diarrhea and consult your doctor if the symptom gets worse.
Stomach pain:
Try to rest and relax. Eat and drink slowly or try to have smaller meals more frequently. Keep a heating pad on your stomach. If the symptom does not improve, consult your doctor.
Tiredness:
Drink plenty of fluid and eat a balanced diet and frequent meals. Do regular minimal exercise and follow a regular sleep schedule. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve.
WARNING & PRECAUTIONS
PREGNANCY
OLMESAR 20MG TABLET is not recommended in early pregnancy and must not be taken when more than 3 months pregnant, as it may cause serious harm to the baby if used after the third month of pregnancy. Consult your doctor before taking OLMESAR 20MG TABLET.
BREASTFEEDING
OLMESAR 20MG TABLET is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women. Your doctor may choose another management especially if you want to breastfeed when your baby is a newborn or born prematurely. Consult your doctor for advice before taking OLMESAR 20MG TABLET.
DRIVING AND USING MACHINES
Do not drive or operate any machines if you feel dizzy or sleepy after taking OLMESAR 20MG TABLET. Consult your doctor before taking OLMESAR 20MG TABLET.
KIDNEY
OLMESAR 20MG TABLET should be taken with caution in patients with kidney problems. Consult your doctor before taking OLMESAR 20MG TABLET.
LIVER
OLMESAR 20MG TABLET is not recommended for use in patients with jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes). It should be used with caution in patients having liver disease. Consult your doctor before taking OLMESAR 20MG TABLET.
ALLERGY
OLMESAR 20MG TABLET is not recommended for use if you are allergic to Olmesartan or any other ingredients of this medicine.
HEART DISEASE
OLMESAR 20MG TABLET should be taken with caution in patients with heart failure or problems with heart valves or heart muscles. Consult your doctor before taking OLMESAR 20MG TABLET.
OTHERS
OLMESAR 20MG TABLET is not recommended for use if you:
- problems with the drainage of the bile from the gallbladder ((biliary obstruction Ex. gallstones)
Before taking OLMESAR 20MG TABLET, inform your doctor if you:
- severe vomiting, diarrhoea or if you are on a low salt diet
- take high doses of diuretics for the management
- problems with adrenal glands
- increased levels of potassium in the blood
Use in pediatrics:
OLMESAR 20MG TABLET is not recommended for use in children (below 6 years of age) and should be used with caution in children and adolescents (6-18 years of age). Your child’s doctor may adjust the dose based on the body weight of the child. Consult your child’s doctor for advice.
Use in geriatrics:
OLMESAR 20MG TABLET should be used with caution in elderly patients (aged 65 years and above). Consult your doctor before taking OLMESAR 20MG TABLET.
INTERACTIONS
A. Drug - Drug interactions:
Before taking OLMESAR 20MG TABLET, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:
- aliskiren or angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (Ex. enalapril, lisinopril, ramipril) and diuretics such as furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide (used to manage high blood pressure)
- potassium supplements and potassium-containing salt substitutes that rise the potassium level in the body
- heparin (medicine used to manage blood clots)
- non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (Ex. aspirin, ibuprofen) (used to manage pain and inflammation)
- lithium (used to manage some types of depression)
- colesevelam (lowers the level of cholesterol in the blood)
- antacids like magnesium hydroxide, calcium carbonate (medicines used to manage indigestion and heartburn)
Overdosage:
If you or anyone else accidentally takes too much of OLMESAR 20MG TABLET, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Overdosage symptoms of OLMESAR 20MG TABLET are low blood pressure, fast heart rate, slow heart rate (bradycardia) if vagal nerve stimulation occurs.

OLMESAR 20MG TABLET should be taken with caution in patients with kidney problems. Your doctor may monitor your kidney function test before and during management with this medicine to manage the risk of kidney damage or any unusual effects due to the accumulation of medicine in the body.
What precautions do I need to follow while taking OLMESAR 20MG TABLET?
Patients taking OLMESAR 20MG TABLET must inform their doctor about their pre-existing disease conditions like kidney, heart or liver problems. Consult your doctor immediately if you experience any unusual symptoms after taking OLMESAR 20MG TABLET.
